The thyroid gland was assessed by ultrasound in healthy euthyroid mixed-breed medium size dogs in different age groups. The objective was to verify ultrasonographic imaging patterns in these groups, as well as to identify possible changes in imaging features resulting from ageing. Thirty dogs - 10 young (<1 year), 10 adult and 10 elderly - without clinical signs or history of thyroid gland disease with complete blood count and thyroid function tests within the reference values were evaluated. Each thyroid lobe was examined by ultrasound for shape, size, echogenicity and echotexture. The analysis of echogenicity and echotexture was made by histogram. Thyroid volume was estimated by the equation for ellipsoid (length × width × height) π/6. The thyroid volume of the young dogs in this study had a tendency to be higher than in adult dogs (P = 0.068) and older dogs (P = 0.120). The height of the thyroid lobe in the longitudinal plane was significantly higher (P = 0.026) in young dogs compared with the other dogs. The echotexture and echogenicity had no significant differences between groups, but the echogenicity was greater in older dogs. The results point out that ultrasound imaging of the thyroid volume is influenced by age in euthyroid dogs.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to analyze the research objects of the theses produced in the Master Program on Public Health offered by the Department of Maternal-Infant Nursing and Public Health--University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing and their relationship with the problems originated from health care practice. These practices were classified within six major areas: Health Care Organization, Health Promotion, Health-Disease Process, Nutrition-Feeding, Professional Practice and Immunology. The contribution of works focussing on the crisis of health paradigms, gender relations and Social Movements in Health were emphasized. Authors concluded that the themes are closely related to the students' professional context, enabling them to present suggestions regarding interventions in health practices.

RESUMO

The present study shows that the nursing practices used on women's assistance, looking forward breast-feeding, transcend an individual technical action. It is known that the kind of assistance practiced will depend on the guidelines set by each institutional organization. These guidelines are based on a prevailed health model which is determined by social and organizational relations that are part of different societies and institutions. The objective of this study is to analyse the relation between the model of breast-feeding assistance established by SUS (Unique Health System) and the actual nursing practice within the Basic Health Units (UBS) of SMS-RP (Municipal Health Office of Ribeirão Preto). Semi-structured interviews with nursing workers were adopted in order to have a report of their practices concerning breast-feeding assistance. The data was examined on the basis of the analyses of content of Bardin (1977). Results showed that there is a considerable difference between the theoretical postulate, and the assistance that is actually practiced. This happens because the nursing practices are submitted to a biomedical model, centered on patients' complaints, which favors medical assistance actions and reinforces prompt assistance. For this reason the study couldn't detect any significant changes regarding the uniqueness of health actions. It was observed that some nursing workers were closer to a better understanding of women care assistance, however the daily determinations have hindered more concrete actions that could transform this practice.

RESUMO

The purpose of this article is to describe nursing in the Brazilian health system and to analyze the characteristics of nursing personnel in Brazil. This description includes types of health institutions, services rendered, and the distribution of nursing personnel by professional categories in 1956, 1982, and 1995. Discussion of the challenges facing Brazilian nurses is presented using data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Federal Nursing Board (COFEn), Regional Nursing Board (COREn), and the Brazilian Nursing Association (ABEn). An increase in the number of outpatient units and in diagnostic and therapeutic examinations has led to an increased the demand for nurses. Public health nurses participate in planning, management, sanitary education, health promotion, and supervision of nursing care provided by nursing technicians, assistants, and other helpers.

RESUMO

This paper intends to report an experience with the process of integrated planning in a Basic Health Unit at Riberiao Preto-SP. we selected as our object of analysis the interactions and dialogues that were expressed in the scope of the local health system. Therefore, we sought to consider the individual dynamics of this reality and the social agents involved (teachers, students, directors, health workers and community workers), trying to understand the communicative action according to HABERMAS (1989). We believe that this is an open space in the perspective of widening the level of integrated participation in the administration of public health services.

RESUMO

This survey consists of a theoretical reflection on the nurse's doing-abouts in the Local Health System (SILOS), allowing the understanding (though temporary) whether the space she occupies at the "entrance door" of the health services has allowed the ideologic construction of her social action, as an individual or collective subject. Thus, we have sought theoretical guidance in the thoughts of Testa (1995) and pointed the SILOS as a social space of the Health System transformation. We have also discussed the relations experienced in the daily life of the institutional organization, trying to understand the production process of social subjects, focusing the nurse and this construction.

RESUMO

Descriptive exploratory study accomplished with the purpose of identifying nurses' scientific productions in the Northeast Region during the period of 1988-1992, checking the rind of papers presented, the predominating theme area and the divulgation used. We observe that there is a sensitive increase in these productions since 1990. Scientific articles and assistentcal area themes predominated, as did the divulgation through national events.
